Robert Barnes was born and raised through the years of high school in the Bighorn mountains of northern Wyoming.
He started working as a photolithographer and started making his own fine-art photography and exhibiting in 1972.
Since he has been using computers for his job, he has been using old techniques like platinum/palladium for printmaking his own photography.
He studied Italian at university for his study of Literature and Comparative Aesthetics, and is also married to an Italian woman. He lists his home as both in Chicago and in Cagliari (Sardinia) where the home of the family of his spouse is.
His professional years have included:

    -Starting and managing the first digital CAD Photolab for Intel.
    -Faculty assistant for Ansel Adams' first workshop for photographic book publishing.
    -Sports photographer and photographic correspondent for the Associated Press.
    -Technical Coordinator for "Fine-Art Photography" lithographers; The Stinehour Press and Black Box
